CBSE Collects Feedback In order to Redesign Homework

In order to redesign homework to make it scientific, practical and research-based, the Central Board of Secondary Education has collected feedback from parents, teachers, principals and students across the country. The feedback was collected by posting a questionnaire on the board website. The responses were to be submitted online and the deadline passed last week.

CBSE Chairman Vineet Joshi said the board is analysing the answers and will use the information to formulate a method to make homework for students from classes VI to VIII more interesting and innovative. It is not yet clear when the exercise will be completed.

Among the questions in the questionnaire were: ‘What do you consider to be the main purpose of homework? What should be the length of homework in a subject per week? If children do not complete homework, how should the school respond? Should same homework be assigned to all students in a class? Should internet usage be a part of homework? Should homework be assigned for all subjects? How does homework aid in teaching? Sources said many students have complained that they get a lot of writing work to do, which is why they fail to complete their learning portion. Also, they get repetitive work, like asking them to write in their notebooks what they have already learnt in their classes. Besides, students have suggested that different subject teachers should co-ordinate with one another while assigning homework on the same day, or the homework should be scheduled for different subjects on different days, it is learnt.

Sources said many parents have sought directions to schools to reduce the burden of homework, and instead focus more on learning. Parents have also asked to change the format of homework in a way that students do not take it as a burden, it is learnt.
