CBSE Physics paper was a brain racker

Whew! One down, and it was quite a tough one. At the end of the Physics exam paper of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 12 on Wednesday, there were many relieved students.

Class 10 and 12 CBSE exams kicked off across the country on Wednesday. As many as 5,408 students appeared for the Class 12 exams in Karnataka.

They described the Physics paper as "lengthy and with more concept-based questions". Rhea Khanna, a Class 12 student of National Public School (NPS), Koramangala, said the paper was easy but time-consuming. "I didn't even get time to revise the answer script," she said.

Sharing similar views, Supriya Srinivas from NPS said the final exam was much better than the school pre-final exams. "It had many concept-based questions. Moreover, finding solutions to these problems was a little difficult. But I am happy it's over now," she said.

Students said no out-of-syllabus questions appeared and neither were there any mistakes in the question paper. "It was tough. The questions were more application-based and there were few direct questions. Last year's was easier," Hitesh Kumar Purohit, a Class 12 student, KV (MEG) said.

The tough section was solving problems based on concepts, for which they had to try various methods before arriving at an answer.

RESULTS IN GRADES

According to a CBSE release, for the Class 10 exam, the weightage of the school-based assessment will remain the same as per past practice, i.e. 20% each in the subjects of Science, Social Science and Mathematics. The new grading system has been introduced at the Secondary School level (for Classes IX & X), effective 2009-10. Only subject-wise grades shall be shown in the performance statement to be issued to all candidates; subject-wise percentile score/rank at the national level will be provided to schools on demand. The practice of declaring `Failed' shall be discontinued.

Those candidates who obtain the qualifying grades (D and above) in all the subjects, excluding additional subjects as per scheme of studies, will be awarded a qualifying certificate. Those candidates who obtain grade E1 or E2 in the subject will have to improve their performance through subsequent five attempts.
