The Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) is planning for a change in the syllabus from the coming academic year (2010-11). According
to board officials, the syllabus will be similar to the CBSE mode of examination.

This is in the wake of centralisation of the education system proposed by the Union HRD ministry. "In future there will be only one board which will design the syllabus and even set question papers. The Centre has set the ball rolling, now it is time for the state governments to act," said a senior official of BIE. He added that the education department has already started the centralisation process in the state with the introduction of CBSE form of grading for the students.

The syllabus change will, however, be done in a slow and steady pace, giving ample time for the students to get adjusted to it. "There will be deletions and additions to the existing syllabus. This will have to be drafted by the end of this academic year. Officials are working on it," said a BIE official. The change is expected to be executed over the next three years, the official added.

According to officials, the syllabus is expected to be made simpler than the existing one as there were many complaints from parents and teachers about the vastness of subjects like physics and chemistry.

"After the Intermediate Public Examinations (IPE), there were many complaints that the pass percentage dipped by 3.2 per cent due to tough syllabus introduced in the previous academic year," said an official.

While the proposal for the change is still pending with the secondary education department, BIE officials said that a decision on the matter will be taken by the principal secretary in a couple of weeks.
