News : Sociology students of CBSE Class XII to have practical projects from 2010

Taking a note of the changing education trends, the Central Board of Secondary Education has decided to include a 20-mark practical project in sociology for students of Class XII.

It will be implemented in the Board examinations to be held in 2010. The project has been introduced in Class XI from this academic session onwards and shall be implemented for the students appearing in their Class XII examination next year.

New textbooks of sociology were introduced for Class XI in 2006-07 and for Class XII in 2007-08, in view of the revision of the syllabus according to the directions from the National Curriculum Framework 2005.

The CBSE through its circular has mentioned that sociology as a discipline is more a mode of inquiry rather than a fixed body of knowledge and hence the importance of the project.

Clarifying about the marks, the CBSE, has said that both the practical project as well as the theory paper shall be evaluated by external examiners.

Rakesh Sachdeva, Principal, DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 15 said: “Sociology is a very interesting subject and projects like visiting old-age homes, slums, will provide an in depth knowledge of the subject. Students will be able to have a clearer picture of the social setup.”
