IAF Airman Technical Trade Examination

As an airman under the Technical Trades, one is involved in the maintenance and testing of aircraft and flying related equipment. He is also directly or indirectly involved in the maintenance and overhaul of ground equipment and armament. Training is given to undertake the operation of all mechanical and electrical systems as an airman’s responsibilities can involve handling sophisticated specialist vehicles.

The Technical Trades have been grouped under the following Combatant Groups:

Combatant Group 'X'
Combatant Group 'Y'

The following are the various technical trades under Group 'X' :

Combatant Group 'Y'

The following are the various technical trades under Group 'Y' :

• PHOTO TECHNICIAN
• SAFETY EQUIPMENT WORKER
• MACHINIST
• MECHANICAL TRANSPORT TECHNICIAN
• AIR DEFENCE SYSTEM OPERATOR
• RADIO TECHNICIAN
• METEOROLOGICAL ASSISTANT

Examinations are held twice every year in the months of August/September or April/May for the courses commencing in the months of January and July.

Eligibility Criteria :

'X' Technical Cadre

Age Limit: 16-22 years

Educational Qualification: Passed Intermediate/10+2/Equivalent examination with Mathematics, Physics and English with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate. OR Three year Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical/ Electrical/ Electronics/ Automobile/ Computer Science/ Instrumentation Technology) from a Government recognised Polytechnic/Institute.

'Y' Technical Cadre

Age: 16-20 years

Educational Qualification: Passed Matriculation/Equivalent examination with English and a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate.

Physical Standards for 'Y' Technical/'X' Technical Cadre

(a) Minimum Height: 152.5 cms (for Mechanical Transport Driver- 165 cms with minimum leg length of 99 cms);

(b) Chest: Expanded chest measurement should not be less than 75 cms with minimum range of expansion of 5 cms;

(c) 1. Vision: For Technical Trades: Aided visual acuity of at least 6/12 in each eye with glasses or 6/6 in one eye and 6/36 in the worse eye. Myopia not exceeding 7D in any meridian Colour vision: Normal/Defective Safe CP2/CP3. Candidates should be physically and mentally fit to serve anywhere in the world For Non-Technical Trades: Visual acuity of at least 6/12 in each eye withglasses or 6/6 in one eye and 6/36 in other eye without glasses and correctable to 6/6 in each eye with glasses. For Mechanical Transport Driver: At least 6/36 (each eye) without glasses correctable to 6/6 and 6/9 with glasses. Hearing-able to hear forced whisper at 600 cms.

Vision:

For Technical Trades: Aided visual acuity of at least 6/12 in each eye with glasses or 6/6 in one eye and 6/36 in the worse eye. Myopia not exceeding 7D in any meridian.

Colour vision: Normal/Defective Safe CP2/CP3.

Candidates should be physically and mentally fit to serve anywhere in the world.

For Non-Technical Trades: Visual acuity of at least 6/12 in each eye with glasses or 6/6 in one eye and 6/36 in other eye without glasses and correctable to 6/6 in each eye with glasses.

For Mechanical Transport Driver: At least 6/36 (each eye) without glasses correctable to 6/6 and 6/9 with glasses.

Hearing- Able to hear forced whisper at 600 cms.

Selection Procedure:

For the recruitment of IAF Airman Technical Trade Cadres, a five-step selection method is followed:

Step 1- Processing of Application: The applications are processed to ascertain the eligibility of the candidates. Then an admit card is sent which contains all the relevant details like the date, time and venue of examination. Technical Trades Candidates are tested in Mathematics, Science, English and Intelligence & General Awareness.

Step 2- Testing the Abilities: The selection tests will be held at any of the 13 Airmen Selection Centres across India. Your answer sheets will be assessed at the examination centres and results announced the same day.

Step 3- Conducting Medical Examination: The candidate will be sent for a medical examination, which shall be conducted by a Medical Officer of the Armed Forces. After the medical examination, one is either declared 'Fit' or 'Unfit' or 'Temporarily Medically Unfit' (TMU).

Step 4- Preparing Merit List: After successfully clearing the examination and being declared medically fit / TMU, the candidate’s name will feature in the All India Merit List. This list will be displayed at the Airmen Selection Centres, where the tests were conducted. A call letter is sent to requesting the candidate to report to the Airmen Selection Centre for enrolment.

Step 5- Undertaking Enrolment: Apart from the enrolment formalities, the candidate will take a Trade Aptitude Test to determine the right trade for him. Depending upon the score as well as the position in the Merit List, the candidate will be assigned to one of the streams in the Technical Trades. After completing enrolment formalities, the successful candidate will be sent to the Administrative Training Institute for 26 weeks for Basic Combatant Training. Thereafter, he will be sent to one of the Training Institutes for specialization in the assigned trade.

Candidates must submit their application on plain paper in the prescribed proforma as published in the Employment News and send it by Post on or before the specified last date, to the President, Central Airmen Selection Boarod, Post Box No 11807, New Delhi-110010.

There are 13 Airmen Selection Centres spread over the country. Their addresses and locations are shown here. After selection the candidates is sent to Belgaum, Bangalore or Chennai depending on the trade for training.
