Buoyed by their exemplary performance, the Centre today decided to open 20 more Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in 2008-09, especially to c
ater to the scheduled caste and tribe students.

A meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved establishing ten schools each in districts having large concentration of SCs and STs at an estimated cost of Rs 431.80 crore, an official spokesperson said.

The central-sector Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNV) scheme, started in 1985-86 with two experimental schools, has grown to 554 schools in 34 states and Union Territories across the country.

All boarding and lodging expenses of students at these fully-residential schools are borne by the Centre.

The performance of the JNV students has shown a steady progress during the past five years, ranging above the performance of private and CBSE average throughout.

While the JNV Class X students scored between 91 per cent in 2004 and 97.54 per cent this year, the average percentage for private schools ranged from 84.8 per cent to 91.77 per cent while that of CBSE schools ranged between 76.6 to 87 per cent.

Similarly from Class XII, JNV students scored an average of 87.7 per cent in 2004 as compared to 80.5 and 80.4 in private and CBSE schools respectively. This year, the JNV percentage stood at 92.44 per cent compared with 81.7 and 80.9 for private and CBSE schools.
