About Us: The Institute was established at ICAR Headquarters at New Delhi on 5th September,1967 and later shifted to Bangalore during February 1968 with late Dr. G.S. Randhawa as the Founder Director. Initially, the Institute had 24.7 ha land under the National Hortorium, which was transferred to Indian Institute of Horticultural Research.
Later, an additional land of 238 ha was transferred to the Institute by Government of Karnataka. The Institute had Central Mango Research Station at Lucknow as its Regional Station, during 1972 which was further upgraded and separated as Central Institute for Sub-Tropical Horticulture.
Similarly, the Institute had Regional Station on Citrus at Nagpur which was upgraded as National Research Centre for Citrus during 1988. In the year 1972 two Central Horticultural Experiment Stations at Chethalli and Gonikoppal were transferred to the Institute. Later during 1979 the Citrus Experiment Station, Gonikoppal was converted into a Krishi Vigyan Kendra. During 1979 another Regional Station was sanctioned at Godhra (Gujarat) which was later merged with National Research Centre for Semi-Arid Horticulture, Bikaner (Rajasthan). Similarly, the Central Horticultural Experiment Station, Ranchi was sanctioned in the year 1979 which was later merged with ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region, Patna.
The Central Horticultural Experiment Station, Bhubaneshwar was sanctioned in the year 1992 to cater to the needs of tribal / coastal belts of Orissa, West Bengal and coastal Andhra Pradesh. During the year 2002, Hirehalli (Karnataka) which was the Regional Station of Central Plantation Crops Research Institute, Kasaragod has been transferred to IIHR, Bangalore and renamed as Central Horticultural Experiment Station.
Apart from this, the Institute has been instrumental in establishment of various other research institutes like National Research Centre for Banana, Trichy (Tamil Nadu); National Research Centre for Grapes, Pune (Maharashtra) and National Research Centre for Litchi, Muzaffarpur (Bihar) which were for sometime under the administrative control of IIHR in the formative years. At present, the Institute has three regional stations and one Krishi Vigyan Kendra under its administrative control.
