CBSE bans the use of rare or endangered wild animals in school laboratories

The Central Board of Secondary Education has warned schools against the use of rare or endangered wild animals in school laboratories. In a circular issued recently, it has asked schools to surrender such specimens immediately to the environment and forest department.

The circular said the director general of forest had complained to the board that some schools or colleges were illegally using rare and endangered wildlife species in their laboratories, which was a violation of the Wildlife Protection Act.

"You may be aware that trading, transit and possessing of wild animals live or dead is banned under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972. I request you to kindly adhere strictly to the provisions of the Act while procuring plants and animals for use in laboratories," said Shashi Bhushan, academic director of CBSE, addressing school principals in the circular. He added that any such illegal species in the possession of schools should be returned to the environment and forest department.
