SECTION A (20 Marks

Question 1

For the Annual Day Function, your school has to put up an exhibition. Your class has also been asked to put up some exhibits on that day. The theme for the exhibition is “Evening wear for young girls”. As a member of this team, you are asked to design and prepare a dress for the same. In this context, give the following information:
(a) What is the name of the dress and why? [3]
(b) For the preparation of the dress, what will be your choice for the following? Give reasons:
(i) Name of the fabric
(ii) Pattern and colour of the fabric
(iii) The required quantity of the fabric
(iv) Other supplementary items required for the preparation of the outfit like buttons, lining, piping, lace, etc. and the quantity of each
(v) The approximate cost. [5]
(c) With the help of appropriate diagrams, give details on the preparation of this dress like layout, drafting, cutting and stitching, etc. in the correct order. [8]
(d) Describe the kind of decorative design you would adopt to make the outfit attractive. Give specific information on:
(i) Design type
(ii) Suitable / appropriate embroidery stitches
(iii) Colour details
(iv) Design placement. [4]

SECTION B (80 Marks)

Question 2

Your school management has sanctioned a sum of Rs.50,000 to renovate the Fashion Designing Laboratory. You and your friend are selected to review the existing tools and equipment in the laboratory and prepare a fresh list of the things needed for your class. Keeping in mind the requirements for your class, state:
(a) A complete list of tools and equipment with appropriate diagrams. [10]
(b) Use, care and storage of each item of these tools and equipment. [10]

Question 3

There are a number of sewing machine models available in the market. There are also special machines meant for a Fashion Designer.
(a) If you are to select one for yourself, which one will you select? Give the name of the model and the brand name. Make an appropriate diagram to denote its various parts. [10]
(b) While using a sewing machine, if the following problems occur, how will you find the causes and the ways of correcting them?
(i) Needle breaking
(ii) Skipped stitches
(iii) Looped stitches
(iv) Fabric puckering
(v) Thread breaking. [10]

Question 4

In your course content, you must have learnt a number of terms related to Fashion Designing. Keeping this in mind, give the details for the following terms:
(a) Adaptation of patterns
(b) Commercial patterns
(c) Drafted patterns
(d) Layout. [20]

Question 5

As a student of Fashion Designing, you are to equip yourself with the knowledge of the various processes involved in the construction of garments. Keeping this in view, while designing the dress, where, how and why will you use the following?

Attempt any two of the following:

(a) Gathers and pleats
(b) Stitches used in inner and outer garments
(c) Seams and darts. [20]

Question 6

After completing your course successfully, if you are employed in an export house and given the responsibility of the following jobs, state how will you deal with them? Justify your answer with suitable examples/diagrams.
(a) Taking body measurements. [10]
(b) Tackling figure problems. [10]

Question 7

As a student of Fashion Designing, what do you know about the following?
(a) Methods of pressing while giving finishing touch to the garments. [10]
(b) Traditional decorative designs and stitches used in the construction and decoration of articles. [10]
