Group Mathematical Olympiad (GMO) will organize by CBSE on 07th December

In an effort to promote excellence in mathematics, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will organize Group Mathematical Olympiad (GMO) on 7thDecember 2014 in different parts of the countries.

The Olympiad will be held in one or two venues in each state for the convenience of students.

Students who are currently studying in class IX – XI can participate in the competition. However, the question paper for all the students will remain same. Each school has to select and send only 5 students who will best qualify the screening Test conducted within the school.

Students selected by the school will have to pay a very small amount of Rs. 100 as an entry fees for the examination which will be in the form of demand draft in the favor of the venue, school, principal or co-coordinator. Last date of applications for the examination is 5th November 2014.

Mathematical Olympiad is the competition conducted by CBSE at regional, state or international levels to identify, encourage, promote and nurture the talent of students who perform exceptionally well in mathematics.

After having been accorded the status of an independent group by the National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM) in 1997, CBSE has been conducting Group Mathematics Olympiad for students studying in affiliated schools.

The Olympiad will be conducted only in English language. Excellence of candidates will be examined on the basis of their knowledge in algebra, geometry, number theory, combinatories etc. CBSE will select only 30 students on merit basis only on pan India basis and these students will get to appear in the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad conducted by NBHM.

Adding on, CBSE Chairman, Vineet Joshi said, “Like scientific temper, it is important to promote mathematical temper amongst young brains as well. This will make children more logical and analytical, aiding them in all stages of life.”
