It
seems that errors in CBSE question papers have become unavoidable. The class XII
mathematics exam on Thursday left students grappling with questions that were
either wrong or had printing errors— and a majority of the students did not
even realise this. Most students found the paper easy at first as many questions
were taken from the NCERT books but they were disappointed when they reviewed
the paper after the exam.
"I found the paper easy but it took me long
to complete the calculations, which made it lengthy. I never realised that there
was a mistake in the paper," said Sandeep Verma from Ryan International,
Mayur Vihar, after the paper. According to maths teachers, one question in each
set was wrong as the binary operation required to be solved in it was not binary
in the first place. "This question had been given in the NCERT book with a
wrong solution. The examiner apparently just picked the question without
verifying it, leaving lakhs of students at a loss in the exam," said Keshav
Aggarwal, a maths tutor. The question carried four marks. There were 29
questions in total.
Set III contained a printing error as well, said
the teachers. The under-root sign in the denominator in Question 21 in this set
was extended, leaving students spending a lot of time solving it. "Set III
was comparatively difficult. Set I was the easiest," said Mohd Sabir
Hussain, maths teacher in Gyan Bharti School, Saket. The question on linear
programming in all the sets confused the students the most. "The question
had two answers — one of them in decimals. This made it difficult for students
to reach a conclusion," said Aggarwal.
Teachers said that students might get a full 100
in this paper if CBSE gives grace marks.
