Schools may not pass CBSE grade system
City schools have adopted the proposal with variations
The recent circular issued by the Central Board of Secondary Education
(CBSE) to schools to do away with the terms "pass" and "fail" up to Class
VIII, has been accepted with some variations.
While some city schools adopted the grading system in their annual exams and
promoted all its students, some gave additional chances to clear the exams
and others refused to bend and have stopped promotion of those who scored an
E.
Talking to Newsline, CBSE Director D R Yadav said, "CBSE has issued a
circular to all the schools to adopt grading system and erase the two terms
pass and fail, up to Class VIII. The schools have to promote students to the
next class irrespective of the grades they get." He explained that the board
has been talking about progressive teaching and each school has been asked
to follow the same. "The process was being adopted to provide elementary
education to all," he said.
H S Mamik, Director, Vivek High School and president of Independent Schools
Association, said, "We are following the grading system but students with E
grades who have been unable to score even the minimum marks are not being
promoted. It shows the students are not prepared to move to the next level
and take additional load. Promoting despite scoring the minimum marks would
mean pushing the student."
Carmel Convent, however, claims it is following the grading system strictly.
School counsellor Punita Singh said, "The idea floated by CBSE has been very
well accepted by our school. All students of Class IX have been promoted to
Class X with A+. We specifically did this to motivate the students."
