Heritage is a conceptual identity of an area which includes not only built tangible heritage but also comprises intangible aspects like its language, lifestyles, ceremonies, festivities, culinary traditions, folk performances, artistic expressions and work cultures inherent /specific of a community. The value of the heritage education at schools level lies in its richness and depth of knowledge it makes available to children and teachers. The primary aim of the heritage education is to encourage awareness of the genius of the natural and cultural heritage that surrounds us in our daily lives and engage children in a direct experience of heritage, preferably outside the classroom wherever it’s possible and appropriate. For example just a short visit of a historical monument or museum can bring alive a number of aspects of a history textbook. To promote the heritage education, we need to encourage schools and teachers and involve them in heritage related activities such as adapting the learning modules/heritage workbooks, heritage walks and heritage clubs etc.

Keeping this altruistic aspiration in mind, CBSE has launched a website on the subject of heritage education in October 2012 in association with SAHAPEDIA. Continuing the journey of making heritage an easily understandable and mainstream subject Dr. Navina Jafa, who is also the heritage consultant with Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation (SRDC), Govt. of Delhi, is organizing a heritage education workshop free of charge on behalf of SRDC, Govt of Delhi. We urge you to send two teachers (one from social and the other from the natural science stream) for the workshop.

The intention of CBSE is a gradual development of the subject as a formal link program for cross-disciplinary study between social and natural sciences. The program on heritage education is going to be a crucial program to make the young citizens of the country aware of their roots and their idea of civilizational identity. This is a crucial understanding in order to launch and position the youth in evolving and becoming global citizens
