CBSE schools witness unusual demand for admission

The inclination of parents in Tiruchi towards CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) schools has become evident in the substantial increase in demand for admissions for the forthcoming academic year.

Most of the over 10 CBSE schools in and around the city have completed the process of making new admissions, it is learnt.

The obvious reason for the unusual demand is the scepticism of a section of parents towards the equitable standard school education that will come under implementation from 2010-11. In the first phase classes I and VI will be brought under the system, and in 2011-12, the system will be extended to other classes.

The equitable standard of school education seeks to incorporate the best features of State Board, Matriculation, Oriental and Anglo Indian streams. The NCERT textbooks are to be used as the model in terms of content, printing quality and visual appeal. However, managements of matriculation schools are not quite convinced and fear dilution of syllabi.

The exhibition will showcase 150 posters, each explaining one Sanskrit shloka from ancient Indian scientific literature. “The shlokas (verses) by ancient scientists and mathematicians like Bhaskaracharya, Baudhayana, Apastambha, Bhaskaracharya’s daughter Leelavati have been showcased in the exhibition.” says Aashish Manjaramkar, exhibition coordinator. “Our aim is to tell that zero is not the only contribution that Indians have made to science and maths.” he adds.

Manjramkar tells, “Very few of us know that speed of light was known to Indians in Vedic period. A shloka says that the speed of light is 2202 yojana per half nimish.  Yojana is a unit of distance which equals to 9.06 miles and half a nimish (nimishardha) is one tenth of a second. Fare well in co-curricular activities for a good exam grade - CBSE

In a major move since the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) ended the 10th standard board examinations and adopted the grading system, the Board has delivered on its assurance to take the extra-curricular performances of a student into account while grading them. From now on, students studying in classes IX and X are entitled for an increase in their grade in one or two academic subjects if they fare well in their extra-curricular activities. The new concept introduced by the CBSE called the Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) promotes extra-curricular activities among students so that they are encouraged and are moulded into a confident individual in their field of interest. According to this new rule, a student stands to gain upto 42 grade points while being assessed in both his academic and non-academic achievements.

A child scoring between 34 and 42 grade points in extra curricular activities stands a chance to be raised to the next levels in two
