How Space Shuttles Work by: Ankit Bahuguna : Class XII-A

In its 25-year history, the space shuttle program has seen exhilarating highs and devastating lows. The fleet has taken astronauts on dozens of successful missions, resulting in immeasurable scientific gains. But this success has had a serious cost. In 1986, the Challenger exploded during launch. In 2003, the Columbia broke up during re-entry over Texas. Since the Columbia accident, the shuttles have been grounded pending redesigns to improve their safety. The 2005 shuttle Discovery was supposed to initiate the return to flight, but a large piece of insulating foam broke free from its external fuel tank, leaving scientists to solve the mystery and the program grounded once more. Disclaimer : The following project outline is provided solely as a guide. It is only intended to be "one example" of requirements for a disaster recovery project plan. It is not, by any stretch of the imagination, the only way to set up a project plan.

If you are new to recovery planning, make sure that you research the subject thoroughly before embarking on a disaster recovery project. Consider engaging a consultant (internal or external to your organization) to help you in your project planning effort. Disaster recovery planning is not a two-month project, neither is it a project that once completed, you can forget about. An effective recovery plan is a live recovery plan. The plan must be maintained current and tested/exercised regularly.

The primary objective of a Business Resumption Plan is to enable an organization to survive a disaster and to reestablish normal business operations. In order to survive, the organization must assure that critical operations can resume normal processing within a reasonable time frame. Therefore, the goals of the Business Resumption Plan should be to:

  • Identify weaknesses and implement a disaster prevention program;

  • minimize the duration of a serious disruption to business operations;

  • facilitate effective co-ordination of recovery tasks; and

  • reduce the complexity of the recovery effort.

Historically, the data processing function alone has been assigned the responsibility for providing contingency planning. Frequently, this has led to the development of recovery plans to restore computer resources in a manner that is not fully responsive to the needs ofthe business supported by those resources. Contingency planning is a business issue rather than a data processing issue. In today's environment, the effects of long-term operations outage may have a catastrophic impact. The development of a viable recovery strategy must, therefore, be a product not only of the provider's of theorganization 's data processing, communications and operations centre services, but also the users of those services and management personnel who have responsibility for the protection of theorganization's assets.

The methodology used to develop the plans, emphasize the following key points:

  • Providing management with a comprehensive understanding of the total effort required to develop and maintain an effective recovery plan;

  • Obtaining commitment from appropriate management to support and participate in the effort;

  • Defining recovery requirements from the perspective of business functions;

  • Documenting the impact of an extended loss to operations and key business functions;

  • Focusing appropriately on disaster prevention and impact minimization, as well as orderly recovery;

  • Selecting project teams that ensure the proper balance required for plan development;

  • Developing a contingency plan that is understandable, easy to use and easy to maintain; and

  • Defining how contingency planning considerations must be integrated into ongoing business planning and system development processes in order for the plan to remain viable over time.

The successful and cost effective completion of such a project requires the close cooperation of management from all areas of Information Systems as well as business areas supported by Information Systems. Senior personnel from Information Systems and user areas must be significantly

The committee will also deliberate on giving Class XII board exam marks weightage during the entrance exam. This came up after NIT directors said that the proliferation of coaching institutes was skewing the pattern of entrants into NITs.

Nearly 10 lakh students appeared for AIEEE for roughly 24,000 seats in engineering colleges across the country. This includes NITs, state engineering

CENTRAL BOARD OF SECONDARY EDUCATION

PREFACE : Philosophy, as a foundational discipline of all knowledge, is essentially practice-oriented. It is both a view and a way of life. It is not just love of wisdom, as its etymology may suggest, but also shaping a life in accordance with the acquired wisdom. It is no doubt a theoretical enterprise but it is not speculative. It has practical applications, as theory without practice is lame and futile and conversely practice without theoretical foundation is blind and at random. Though philosophy is global in its theoretical formulation its application has to be local and regional in concrete life-situations and therefore Indian context is prominently put forth here. It can be supplemented from contexts of other cultures. The need for some reference material in Philosophy was being felt for quite some time since there are only a few study materials existing particularly at school level on applied philosophy. It is expected this reading material will prove useful to our teachers in effective transaction of this syllabus and to our students in pre
