Syllabus CBSE Class XI Media Studies | NCERT

Rationale

The media are the most widespread and influential system of communication in the contemporary world. They construct and circulate information and organize perception through sound, screen and print form, which help to shape our sense of self and our relationship with the society. Over the past few years, media in India have grown significantly. They, in fact, have become part of all areas of life. They are generating profit and employment, providing information on political process and events, motivating public debate, providing place for cultural expression and most importantly entertaining the public. Through the course on Media Studies students at the higher secondary level will be given an opportunity to get introduced to all these aspects of the media by developing a good understanding of the theoretical and practical facets of media. At this level the course will enable students to develop a conceptual understanding of the media that will involve both critical reception of and active production through the media. It will also enable students to express their own voice through media, as well as the ability to see through what mass media offers. The basic idea is to provide students with an opportunity to develop life skills which will enable them to analyze these potent forms of modern communication and to help students to become wise consumers of media and also professional communicators who can contribute to the media industry by being part of it.

SGAI is finally ready for launch

Are you one of those brave CBSE students who have decided to give the Class X board exams a miss and go along with CBSE's new reforms, which involve a system of continuous and comprehensive evaluation all year long? If so, you're probably wondering which stream to pick in junior college, a decision usually based on one's score in the board exams.

In a bid to help students figure out where they are headed in the absence of board exams, the CBSE board launched its Students Global Aptitude Index (SGAI)—a battery of aptitude tests meant to gauge both aptitude and interest in various subjects—earlier this week. A circular released by the CBSE board earlier this week, the SGAI is finally ready for launch after a rigorous process of standardisation. The aptitude tests are optional, and are on offer for Rs 100.

In order to assess the ability of students, the CBSE will introduce a psychological aptitude test for class X on the lines of similar exams held in other parts of the world. CBSE will hold this exam under Students Global Aptitude Index (SGAI). CBSE's SGAI incharge Rama Sharma said, "The exam will be held for class X and the first paper might be on January 15, 2011.

The interested students have to pay Rs 100 to appear in the exam." The main aim of holding the exam is to know about the students' interest, their psychology and their skill levels, Sharma said. This exam is based on a scientific index which will tell about the interest of students.

The Aptitude reflects the inherent capacity, talent or ability of a child. Aptitude testing is a student-friendly, universally accepted mode of rating capabilities for a particular activity. Aptitude tests are known to be reliable predictors of future scholastic achievement as they provide a profile of strengths and weaknesses of a student.

CBSE asks schools to reduce homework and the number of tests

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked affiliated schools to reduce homework and the number of tests being given to children as part of formative assessment. The board was responding to feedback from parents and students on the implementation of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) scheme introduced in schools as an educational reform last year.

Why parents can't do maths today?

Why parents can't do maths today?

Long division and long multiplication have been replaced in schools by chunking and gridding. While the new methods are meant to make maths easier, parents have been left scratching their heads, writes Rob Eastaway.

I used to think I had a good understanding of maths - until my daughter started going to primary school. That's when I discovered a revolution had taken place in the way arithmetic is taught, and there were techniques and terminology that meant nothing to me.

Let me give you a flavour. In most primary schools, maths lessons are called numeracy. Children work using number lines and learn their number bonds, they fill in Carroll Diagrams, and they calculate using the grid method and something that carries the peculiar name of "chunking".

Like most parents - numerate or otherwise - my first reaction to this was annoyance. Why have they changed it? Now my child gets cross when I try to explain using my methods. Is this why some people reckon the country's maths is going to the dogs?

CBSE would be coming out with a virtual lab to help students

The Central Board of Secondary Education would be coming out with a virtual lab in which students can perform chemical experiments several times on the internet to help them understand concepts better. Several students were afraid of handling chemicals in laboratories and did not attend laboratory sessions in schools, Vineet Joshi, Chairman, CBSE, said.

“When IIT is able to replicate textbooks with audio and video, why cannot we do something similar for the lab sessions, which made me think of the virtual lab concept,” he said.

Implementation of CCE - Formative and Summative Assessments

CBSE
Concerns of Parents and Students on implementation of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation
Formative and Summative Assessments

The CBSE had initiated the scheme of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) and Grading System at secondary stage in all schools affiliated to it from the session 2009-10 in Class IX. By and large the scheme has been accepted and implemented whole heartedly by the schools.

However as part of the formal and informal feedback from the parents, students, principals and teachers a few concerns have been raised by a few stakeholders which are recorded below:

1. Too many tests, assignments, projects, homework and review tests (in some schools as many as seven review tests per week) are being taken.

2. The projects are being given to students (to be done at home) which in most cases lead to no real learning as they are either done by siblings/parents or conveniently outsourced to entrepreneurs who have set up shop.

3. The stress on students is increasing due to minute microscopic examination of behaviour which also makes students behave artificially.

4. No real time is being provided to students to play or participate in Co-Scholastic activities

5. There is an element of subjectivity in assessing skills especially the coscholastic skills.

6. Some schools have no Parent Teacher Meeting at all or where it is convened, it remains a few and far between event. Keeping the above facts in mind, the Board once again would like to clarify and reinforce the following points.

The Board vide its circular no 01, 2010 had specifically stated that "the tasks which relate to projects and activities can be done in groups as in-class and school activities and not become an extension of work to be done by siblings or parents".

Further to it, the Board in its circular no. 36, 2010 has given a background to the need of involving and integrating various formative tasks as part of the Formative Assessment.
