Physical Education & Sports in Schools

Schools are dynamic settings for promoting health and wellness through various correlated areas such as Physical Education and Sports as well as through Health and Wellness Clubs. There is a growing awareness that the health and psycho-social well-being of young children is of paramount importance and schools can provide a strategic means of improving children’s health, self-esteem, life skills and behaviour. Healthy living incase of school children is the prime concern of all stakeholders including principals, parents, teachers and the community. To achieve this objective collective responsibility needs to be assumed. An important dimension is that of experience and development of health skills and physique through practical engagements with play, exercises, sports and practices of personal and community hygiene.

The CBSE through its various advisories (Circular No. 09 dated 31.5.2006, Circular No. 29 dated 20th June, 2007, Circular No. 27/08 dated 24th June, 2008, Circular No. 49 dated 6th Nov., 2008 and Circular No. 57 dated 20.11.2009) has directed schools to set up Health and Wellness Clubs which can be used to conduct the activities which are detailed in the School Health Manuals in four volumes already released to all the schools. It is well established that participation in Physical Education & Sports activities is highly beneficial to one’s health and it leads to improved performance by students in schools, in addition to helping them in developing many life skills. Children lead happier lives as a result of being actively involved in sporting activities and it has long been established that fitness and improved academics performance go hand in hand. Physical Education and Sports activities during the school hours reduce boredom and help keep students attentive in the classrooms.

(Competition) NSTSE 2011 Online Registration

https://cbseportal.com/images/nstse_logo.gif

National Level Science Talent Search Examination

NSTSE is a diagnostic test which actually helps students improve.

Unlike regular tests which try only to find out how much a child knows (or has memorized), NSTSE measures how well a student has understood concepts and gives detailed feedback on the same, to help them improve.

Thus NSTSE helps each student know whether he/she has actually understood a concept early on so that immediate action can be taken. Often students have conceptual gaps which increase as they progress and when they reach the higher classes, they develop a "phobia" for the subject.

School tests - including board exams - tend to be superficial, testing what children have memorised. But the important skills like the ability to think independently and reason logically - critical in today's world - are often not emphasised in school tests.

The focus on fundamentals is so important that when the child finishes studies he/she will have to face the competitive world armed with these fundamentals. Even while opting for higher studies, the student has to go through a complete scan of what he/she knows and how much. Exams like IIT-JEE, AIEEE, AFMC, AIIMS, GRE, GMAT, CAT etc., are so designed to test the fundamental strength of student. Hence the need of the hour is building the fundamentals base as strong as possible.

This exactly is the philosophy behind the Unified Council's NSTSE.

NSTSE is unlike other tests in many different ways.

  • It has interesting questions that require thinking, not simply recall.
  • Provides detailed skill-wise feedback highlighting strengths and weaknesses
  • Provides a benchmark of the student's performance with peers all over the country.

Thus, NSTSE focuses on IMPROVEMENT rather than comparison or grading. It also reduces the stress of exams by checking UNDERSTANDING rather than FACTS.
