Tips and tricks to Crack CLAT Exam

Tips and tricks to Crack CLAT Exam

While the board examination has started in various states of the country, students are also geared up for the entrance tests. For law colleges aspirants, the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) will be held on May 14. CLAT is conducted for admission in LLB and LLM courses offered by 18 National Law Universities of India.

CLAT opens the door to some of the country’s most-reputed law schools. The universities which take part in this exam include the National Law School of India University in Bangalore (NLSIU), National Academy of Legal Study and Research University of Law in Hyderabad (NALSAR), the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences in Kolkata (WBNUJS) and Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai (MNLU).

“Time management is the most important factor in CLAT,” says Sonal Gupta, an instructor at the Law Coaching Center, Lakshmi Nagar, New Delhi. “It is therefore important for students to understand which section is more scoring and which one is time-consuming. Therefore, aspirants should focus on easier sections first and do as many mock tests as possible.”

She recommends to follow a simple pattern — English and general knowledge first, legal aptitude second followed by mathematics and Logical Reasoning (LR). These are the five main sections of the paper.

Strategy for CLAT Exam challenge

Strategy for CLAT Exam challenge

With more than 40,000 students expected to write the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) on May 14, the ratio is quite skewed, as there are only around 2,000 seats in all 18 National Law Schools put together. Of course, several private law colleges also use CLAT scores to give admission for their five-year B.A. LLB., programme. However, for a student who is determined to join only the National Law Schools, the competition will be tough. Strategic preparation, meticulous planning and systematic hard work will ensure one’s success in this challenging entrance test.

Set your target: The starting point of any worthwhile pursuit is to set your goal clearly. If you are keen on joining the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru (NLSIU), or NALSAR Law University, Hyderabad, you are chasing only 120 seats. It also means you should emerge in the top one per cent. Do a little bit of research to find out which rank you must get to make it to a law school of your choice. There is no cutoff percentage indicated by CLAT authorities; admissions to the National Law Schools are based on merit-cum-preference scheme. So, be careful while ranking preferences of law schools at the time of submitting the online application for CLAT. These preferences cannot be changed later.

The balancing act: We live in an era where multi-tasking is the order of the day. While the focus for any Class XII student is board exams, it is not wise to completely shut off from entrance exam preparation. Surely, most students can find at least one hour a day for CLAT preparation. Vocabulary building, brushing up on arithmetic and keeping oneself abreast of current affairs can all be managed within this one hour. These exercises, if done meticulously through the next couple of months, will keep you in top form for the final leg of preparation. Also, since the CBSE examination has been postponed by a week this year, many students will complete their exams only by mid-April. Such students have no choice but to begin their preparation for CLAT right away.

About CLAT-2017

Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a non-statutory body created under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the convenience of the students seeking admission to various National Law Universities in the country. An entrance test is conducted to provide a list of candidates on the basis of ‘merit-cum-preference’ to each University for admission to their Under-Graduate (UG)/ Post-Graduate (PG) programmes, as per the eligibility, reservation and other criteria laid down under the respective statutes of the participating Universities.

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), is an all India common entrance examination, conducted on rotational basis by 18 National Law Universities (NLUs) for admissions to their UG and PG degree programmes. The 18 participating NLUs in the order of their year of establishment are:

(Article) Glorious Career Opportunities in Law

(Article) Glorious Career Opportunities in Law

One of the most rewarding careers both in terms of job challenge and monetary benefits is undoubtedly law. Open to students of all streams, law is suitable for someone who has a passion for understanding the legal systems of the country and who is looking for challenging and exciting opportunities at the work front. In the last couple of decades, there has been a steady increase in the demand for law graduates in diverse fields.

CHOICES IN SIGHT

With the entry of a number of law firms, the recruitment of law graduates has reached a new high. These law firms not only take up litigation but also aid clients with mergers, acquisitions, due diligence audits and a range of related work. These firms make a beeline to top law schools, particularly the National Law Schools, to rope in the best brains during campus recruitment drives. Most of these firms pay handsome salary packages to the young law recruit, and this is indeed drawing a lot of law graduates to the law firms. Depending upon the stature of the law firms and the academic background of the candidate, these law firms offer fresh law graduates annual salaries ranging from Rs. 8 lakh to Rs.12 lakh.

On the other hand, law graduates, who are keen on embarking on practice in law, normally do not participate in the campus recruitment and scout for a typical law firm engaged in litigation or prefer to work under a Senior Advocate. Eager to be trained by an “expert” in the chosen area, they are content with a moderate remuneration package, but have their eyes set on learning the ropes of the profession. Most of these law firms or law offices of established lawyers pay these freshers anywhere around Rs.3 lakh to Rs.5 lakh, as it is equally important for them to have efficient hands and retain talent. Today, law graduates are looking at untapped and emerging fields of law such as Environment Law, Intellectual Property Rights, Arbitration, Taxation and Competition Law, to mention a few, and are no longer restricting themselves to traditional areas of civil or criminal sides.

PUBLIC SECTOR AND PEDAGOGY

Higher levels of autonomy granted to public sector undertakings have, in recent years, led regular recruitment year after year. Banks and PSUs look for knowledgeable and bright law graduates to join their legal department, as law officers, to perform a variety of functions such as drafting, negotiating and vetting contracts. Steady job, fixed working hours, assured salary increase and promotions are the attractive features of this opportunity. Annual starting salaries including perks could range from Rs. 4.5 lakh to Rs.7 lakh.
